Artist Alert: Nettie Wakefield

I am just in absolute awe over Nettie Wakefield's immaculate drawings.
Her Reversed Portrait Series has me drooling out of lust.

And, seriously, I want every single one of these hairstyles.

Artist Alert: Emily Anderson

surprised me with the sweetest package this week.
We have many mutual friends
and had both found each other on Instagram.
(Funny story... I have been following her for so long
that in my seemingly thoughtless brain I had merged her
account with another artist friend of mine whose initials are MZ.
Both Emily and my friend Michelle live in Seattle
and are fantastic artists.
Emily posted this beautiful Isaiah print and asked if anyone wanted a copy.
Totally thinking it was my friend Michelle posting,
I jumped all over the offer.
I wrote Emily a jolly little e-mail starting with, "Dear Michelle! It has been so long..."
Emily graciously corrected me and I blushed for days!)
But, holy moly, am I glad about this mix up!

Not only did Emily make me feel not so bad about my
inability to understand social media,
but she also wrote me the sweetest note and sent
custom stationery that might just be too beautiful to actually use.

Artist Alert: Danielle Guenther

NYC photographer Danielle Guenther's,
"Best Case Scenario" series has me cracking up!

Some of these images just hit a little too close too home. :)

Artist Alert: Fredrik Odman

Photographer Fredrik Odman was hired by the ad agency Leo Burnett Switzerland
to create a poster campaign for Samsung's "NX mini" camera.
I am enamored with his use of (art) historical references
in portraying the camera's slogan,
For self-portraits, Not selflies.

Artist Alert: Elizabeth Mayville

I feel about as belated on this gal as any artist could be,
but in case you are like me and just live under a rock
(sometimes multiple rocks stacked one on top of each other),
Elizabeth Mayville is one talented painter!

She is most well-known (at least on the Pinterest archives)
for her illustrations of the back of girls' heads.

But, recently I stumbled upon some of her still-lifes and fell hard for their vibrant simplicity.

Artist Alert: Alyson Johnson

It's not everyday that I click on Pinterest and
see a series of pictures featuring one of my friends.

My heart raced with excitement as I browsed the many images
of long-time friend, Alyson Johnson, on my virtual bulletin board.

Style Me Pretty featured Alyson and her BEAUTIFUL artwork
today on their SMP Living blog and pinned several images from the article.

Isn't she is gorgeous!?

This girl has TALENT.

Check out her work and charming interview here.

Oh! And, don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the feature for
a chance to win $150 credit to Alyson Johnson Creative.

Artist Alert: Nicole Joelle

It was a happy accident that I stumbled upon sweet Nicole's blog
just as she was giving away a free printable.
Lucky me and lucky YOU
because I think she still has spots available
if you are interesting in playing along!!

As an artist who is not quite comfortable promoting myself
and/or my work, but understanding the direct correlation
between promotion and selling of one's work,
I am absolutely thrilled to help promote a fellow artist via social media.

Nicole's Print Shop is filled with affordable and adorable instant downloads
that print really beautifully on card stock.

I printed off this lovely reminder and put it in my classroom.
It is the perfect reminder of my daily mission as a teacher,
{which on some days is easier said than done}:

Thank you, Nicole!!

Check out her shop and her blog.

Artist Alert: Classic Hipsters

My friend, Catherine, pinned this photo on Pinterest,
and I just couldn't resist to open the link.
Much to my delight, I found several more photos of classic sculpture
in hipster garb photoshopped by the artist Alexis Persani.
This seriously cracked me up!

Classical sculptures dressed as hipsters look contemporary and totally badass

Artist Alert: El Anatsui

Ghanian sculptor, El Anatsui,
creates these largescale tapestries
using beer caps and flattened bottle tops.

"Life is not glamorous,
and I want my work to reflect that," he says.
"These materials are lowly bottle caps."

Despite his assertion that his work is not filled with glamour,
I dare say his tapestries are quite beautiful and dramatic.
There is something so Klimt-like in his work,
it can't help but drum up a romantic feeling for us Westerners.

Artist Alert: Rowan Mersh

My AP students are starting to develop their concentrations for their final portfolios.
For their concentrations, they must create a body of related works that explores a specific visual idea.
Before they dive into this rather sophisticated endeavor,
I have asked my students to research contemporary artists
who have explored similar ideas to their own.

One of my students is interested in developing her concentration
around the idea of voluminous garments.
Through her research, she discovered the very evocative and talented textile artist, Rowan Mersh.

Artist Alert

In honor of Helen Frankenthaler's death last week,
here are some of her beautiful abstract paintings.
